After a video of her stealing chocolates from a mall went viral on social media, a college student is believed to have committed suicide in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district, according to police.
The third-year undergraduate student’s body was discovered hanging in her home on Sunday in the Subhas Pally neighbourhood near the Jaigaon police station, according to reports.
Officer-in-charge of Jaigaon Prabir Dutta stated that the body had been sent for a post-mortem examination and that an investigation was in progress.
On September 29, the girl and her sister visited a nearby shopping centre, and according to her father, as they were leaving, the girl was apprehended for allegedly stealing chocolates.
He said she paid the cost of the chocolates and expressed her regret to the store’s management.
He continued, “However, customers at the store recorded a video of the entire incident and posted it on social media, which went viral.
According to her father, she took drastic action out of humiliation.
After the body was discovered, the neighbourhood organised a protest outside the mall and demanded that those responsible for creating and uploading the video face harsh punishment.
It was impossible to get in touch with the mall’s management right away for comment.
